Large-Scale Teledata Infrastructure
To open the massive, 159,000-square-foot Meijer store in Alliance, Ohio, our team was tasked with installing a comprehensive teledata infrastructure, which included:
Ensuring high-speed and reliable data transmission throughout the store.
Providing a high-capacity backbone to support various digital solutions.
That manage the telecommunications cabling between a main distribution frame and remote workstation devices.
Enabling robust wireless connectivity for both customers and staff.
Ensuring clear communication throughout the entire operation.
Providing solutions for every aspect of Meijer’s telecommunication needs.
Meijer opened its first store in Ohio in 1981. By the end of 2025, the retailer will have invested nearly a half billion dollars into the area by opening and remodeling more than 20 stores, creating nearly 4,000 jobs, and supporting the missions of local nonprofits. Meijer employs more than 11,000 team members statewide at 55 stores and its distribution and manufacturing facilities in Tipp City.
The new Meijer supercenter, located at 2500 West State St. in Alliance, is a sprawling state-of-the-art retail establishment built on the former Carnation City Mall property, and is part of Meijer’s continued investment in the region.
The Alliance project represents the sixth new store for which Harrington Electric has contributed its expertise in planning, coordinating and installing a large-scale teledata infrastructure.
For this project, Meijer required a robust system to support their in-store communications and innovative digital shopping platforms, which include a “Shop & Scan” feature that allows customers to scan barcodes via a mobile app and bag their items as they shop (streamlining the checkout process); and providing the wireless access points that support, among other things, the company’s “Aira Service,” an innovative app-based service providing live navigation assistance to blind and low-vision customers using their smartphone cameras.
The Harrington Electric team, consisting of Jason Longgood, Deb McCommon, Jerry Smith and Kevin Williams, and led by the company’s telecommunications estimator and project manager, Rich Harrold, was tasked with providing a comprehensive set of teledata solutions, which included the cable and fiber backbone to support the many systems that run the store’s voice, data, and paging systems; installing more than 90 wireless access points throughout the 159,000-square-foot facility; and wiring the store’s many point-of-sale stations.
With this sixth store project completed, Harrold’s team of four professionals have become masters at managing large-scale installations. The team now sets its sights on two upcoming Meijer stores slated for construction in Medina and Richmond Heights, Ohio.
By the end of 2025, Meijer plans to have invested nearly half a billion dollars into Ohio, opening and remodeling nearly 20 stores, creating almost 4,000 jobs, and supporting local nonprofits.
Harrold commented on the rapport Harrington Electric has developed alongside Meijer. “Harrington Electric’s work on the Meijer supercenter in Alliance exemplifies our dedication to providing innovative and reliable teledata infrastructure solutions,” he said. “As Meijer continues to expand and invest in the region, we’re very proud to be their trusted partner, supporting their mission to enhance customer experiences through the use of advanced technology.”
Harrington Electric Co. prides itself on delivering cutting-edge solutions that meet the evolving needs of our clients. Our recent project with Meijer at their new Alliance supercenter stands as a testament to our commitment to excellence and innovation.
